This month’s edition of Columbia Business Monthly features our very own Dr. Marla Sanders and Dr. Tracy West as they discuss The Alternative Pathways to Educator Certification (APEC) Center. The APEC Center was established in June 2018 through a partnership with Richland School District One and Fairfield County School District to offer an alternative pathway to teacher certification.
Dr. Marla Sanders is Associate Professor of Education and Co-Director of the APEC Center, and Dr. Tracy West is Dean of the Division of Education and Co-Director of the APEC Center. Their article, APEC Center: A New Pathway for Potential Teachers, outlines some of the challenges South Carolina faces with teacher shortages and retention, and discusses how the APEC Center works to help tackle this issue.
Alternative programs like APEC provide the perfect opportunity to empower working adults as they pursue their career goals and ensure that children in South Carolina have access to high-quality certified teachers.
