April 23, 2025

Columbia College proudly hosted SpearsFest 2025 on April 22, a day-long celebration of experiential learning, academic excellence, and social impact, held in honor of Reverend Dr. R. Wright Spears—an inspiring former president who led the College from 1951 to 1977 with vision, enthusiasm, and unwavering commitment to community. Named in his honor, SpearsFest brings together students, faculty, alumni, and community members to showcase the meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that define the Columbia College education.

Morning Highlights
The day began in Spears Concert Hall with opening remarks from Provost Dr. Kristine Barnett and the presentation of the Caroline Whitson “Leadership That Makes a Difference” Awards. The keynote address was delivered by alumna and entrepreneur Callie Goodwin ’15, founder of Sparks of Joy Co. and a leader in higher education social media. Drawing from her experience as a student and now a digital changemaker, Goodwin inspired the audience with stories of creativity, community-building, and the power of authentic connection.

Student Scholarship on Display
Throughout the day, classrooms in the Breed Leadership Center were filled with over 40 student-led presentations spanning disciplines from science and sustainability to social work, dance, and business. Highlights included:

  • "Recycling Water: The Path from Source to Waste and Back" – a deep dive into water treatment and environmental regulation.
  • "The Clothesline Project" – a powerful experiential presentation raising awareness of domestic violence.
  • "Understanding the 'Isms' of Social Justice" – social work students sharing personal narratives to highlight systemic inequities.
  • "Pura Vida: Our Global Education" – a moving reflection from student-athletes who combined service and sport in Costa Rica.
  • "Level Up: Building Careers with Purpose" – a presentation on branding, interviewing, and launching meaningful careers.
  • "Tapped In: The Science and Craft of Brewing at Peak Drift" – a behind-the-scenes look at a microbiology internship at a local brewery.

Afternoon sessions further explored themes of justice, equity, health, and innovation through discussions on gender equity in sports, the impact of censorship in higher education, and the therapeutic promise of cannabinoids in Alzheimer’s treatment.

A Showcase of Artistry and Research
The day also included the Honors Senior Medallion Ceremony and a vibrant lineup of poster presentations in the Learning Commons. Topics ranged from health inequities in Columbia's 29203 ZIP code to neuroscience, environmental sustainability, and the influence of music on student wellness. The Partners in Peace Nobel Museum exhibit added an interactive, global dimension, engaging guests in Nobel Peace Prize history and student-led advocacy.

Evening Events
The celebration concluded with a dual showcase of student artistry:

  • The Senior Art Exhibition opened in the Goodall Gallery, highlighting the creative vision of Columbia College’s Studio Art majors.
  • The Senior Dance Capstone Concert took place in College Place Chapel, where dance majors presented original choreographic research exploring identity, healing, and expression.

SpearsFest 2025 was a powerful reminder of what makes Columbia College distinct: bold ideas, committed learners, and a community that values education as a pathway to leadership and service. Thank you to all who participated and attended. We invite you to continue the celebration of learning, community, and transformation throughout the year.
