Leadership at CC

Washington
Semester

Ramona Gibbs is a senior at Columbia College, a women’s liberal arts college in Columbia, South Carolina. Gibbs was selected to participate in Washington Semester, a Columbia College opportunity that provides students work experience in Washington, D.C.

During her Washington Semester, Gibbs filmed footage for two films, one on U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn and one on her experiences in Washington, in cooperation with professional filmmaker Susan Mackey Hogue and her reporting professor Claudia Smith Brinson, an award-winning journalist for thirty years with The State newspaper. Brinson now leads the professional writing track at Columbia College.

Gibbs’ responsibilities included recording daily life in Washington, obtaining interviews with lawmakers and their staffs, and attending a variety of events, including press conferences, protests, luncheons, committee meetings, legislative conferences, and any opportunity that permitted camera access. These video clips provide a glimpse of her experience in Washington as a student reporter with unique access to the legislative process.
