Overview

The Chemistry program offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree as well as a minor in Chemistry. Additionally, within BS degree there are two options, the traditional chemistry track and the biochemistry track. While all three degree options give students a strong foundation in the core areas of chemistry, the traditional chemistry track prepares students for graduate work and employment in the chemical industry and the biochemistry track is a good option for students pursing a graduate or professional degree in the medical field.

Our chemistry classes are generally limited to fewer than 25 students, and are all taught by full-time doctoral-level faculty members. The laboratory portions of our courses are closely integrated with the lectures and our teaching labs are equipped with modern instrumentation of which students are expected to become proficient users. Our chemistry majors are encouraged to participate in undergraduate research either at Columbia College or through summer undergraduate programs at major research universities. Students can also earn academic credit for an internship at local government agencies or industries.
