The Columbia College Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program, housed in the Division of Education (Ariail-Peele Building), offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech-Language Pathology.

Therapist candidates will earn sufficient client contact hours to be eligible for a SLP Assistant license but all candidates should be aware that a Master's degree is necessary to be a Speech Language Pathologist..

The Columbia College program follows South Carolina Division of Education standards and has received NCATE accreditation. Columbia College is also recognized as a Teaching Fellows institution by the South Carolina Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement.

Therapist candidates in the SLP program at Columbia College complete coursework related to the development of speech, language, and hearing skills. Professional coursework also focuses on the nature, prevention, evaluation, and treatment of communication disorders. Unlike most undergraduate SLP programs, Columbia College provides a variety of field experience opportunities for therapist candidates. Off-campus field experiences are completed in the public schools, clinics, private practice offices.

SLP candidates are responsible for keeping and filing with Columbia College, documentation of observation and therapy hours completed in the SLP program. These are important documents candidates will want to have in hand for documentation of hours in graduate school, certification and licensure. Although we make every effort to assist in tracking hours and filing copies of these forms in candidate files, if a candidate has not filed these in our office as requested, they will not be on file in the future.

Speech-language pathologists are master's level professionals who evaluate, treat, and conduct research about human communication and its disorders. They work in schools, hospitals, businesses, in private practice, in universities, research laboratories, and government agencies, with infants and children, with adolescents and adults, and with older people (ASHA, 2002).

If the SLP alumnae has filed the appropriate documentation while attending Columbia College and wishes to have a copy from Columbia College files, a handling fee of $10.00 is required to have these mailed. Please send a written request with your name, year of graduation, and where you completed your field experiences while at Columbia College. Please include a check for $10.00 made payable to Columbia College. A copy of your observation and/or therapy contact hour sheets will be sent or faxed to you as you indicate.
