Abigail V. C/O ’04 – B. A. Business Administration
Abigail and her husband opened a restaurant in Columbia after she earned her B.A. in Business Administration from the Evening College. “When my husband and I opened a restaurant, I wrote our business plan, set us up as an LLC, wrote the Operating Agreement for the LLC and did most of the legwork for our business startup. It took about a year and a half from the time we started writing the business plan to opening the doors, but I just want you know it would never have been possible had I not earned my degree in the Evening College.”
“Not only did my degree from Columbia College help me with my career while I was in school, but it helped us tremendously with this huge endeavor. The classes I took in marketing, management, economics, business writing, accounting, business law, and business ethics enabled me to accomplish things I never would have dreamed. I designed our website, wrote the business plan, obtained the financing, handled the business set up, programmed our point of sale system, costed out all of our products, handled the marketing aspects - from designing the logo to writing the Marcom plan, and I oversee the accounting duties for the business.
All of this was possible because of the empowerment I received while working full-time, raising a family, and going to school full time.

“I had attended other colleges, but there is a big difference when you attend the Evening Program at Columbia College. This college doesn’t just ‘say’ it will give you an education, it ‘lives’ it. Students are important. Faculty members are inspiring and genuinely care about your success. Fellow students are serious. The curriculum is challenging. When I enrolled, I thought a bachelor’s degree was all I wanted or needed. Live and learn.
Upon graduation, I enrolled in graduate school and wondered if I would be well prepared academically when sitting in classes with students from schools across the country. You don’t truly know the strength of your undergraduate work until have something to compare it to, and I was extremely well prepared for the rigor of graduate work because of my Columbia College education.”
Thanks to my Columbia College professors opening my eyes to opportunities, I will soon enter a Ph.D. program and plan to teach on the collegiate level and inspire students just like I was inspired at Columbia College.”

“Teachers make a difference. Every day. Because of my third grade teacher, I wanted to ‘grow up’ and be a teacher. I never lost that dream and after earning my associates degree, I enrolled in the Evening Program at Columbia College. It took me five years to earn my bachelor’s degree, but that’s because I took courses at my own pace while working full time and having a family life. You can do it faster if that works for you, but the most important thing is that you never give up.
Professors make a difference. My advisor kept me on track academically and he genuinely cared about my success. I could drop by his office and he would stop whatever he was doing to encourage me, answer my questions, or just listen. There were times when I was overwhelmed, but professors helped me stay focused, be positive, and not give up my dream. Through the course of my studies, I developed the Columbia College Attitude: accept a challenge, stay committed, grow in confidence, develop competence, and then go out in the world and make a difference.
I’m making a difference. Did I forget to tell you that I’m now a third grade teacher? That’s right, and I have a graduation gift from my third grade teacher sitting on my desk. It’s a picture of me in third grade. That picture reminds me to convey to my students a love of learning and a belief that I will never give up on them, just as my third grade teacher never gave up on me.
You can make a difference. If you have a passion to teach, go ahead and apply online to the evening program at Columbia College. You can develop the Columbia College Attitude and fulfill your dream of making a difference in the lives of students every day, just like I am.”

“Today I received some very good news that I am both glad and proud to share with all of you. I was recently hired for a federal position and the salary and opportunity are beyond anything I ever imagined. While it is my persistence and dedication to education and the legal field that is paying off, I have no doubt that I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for the support and knowledge that I received from all of you.
The interviewers inquired about Columbia College and all I could do was sing your praises. I decided to further my education after completing my associate’s degree at Midlands Technical College. Honestly, I only selected Columbia College because, like Tech, it is a small campus and I believed that the transition would be smooth and it indeed was. However, I have gained so much more. I have learned: how to read effectively and the benefits of having an advanced vocabulary, how to communicate in various ways and in diverse atmospheres, an understanding of political science and the roles women play in it, what true leadership is and how I can lead even when I am in the follower position and, of course, the 4 Cs, values I will carry with me throughout the course of my life.
As a child I was never much of an award winner. I think I was student of the month once. I never saw the day when I would be winning scholarships and a speech competition, presenting at a conference, and traveling abroad to China. Thank you for the experiences and providing me with the opportunities to surpass even my own expectations. I will forever be grateful. “

“I just wanted to let you know that I am FINALLY done. I can't believe it. My college experience in the Evening Program at Columbia College was great. All the professors were excellent and made my experience very enjoyable. I finally have a college degree and with it I received a great increase in pay in my career. It goes to show that a degree can take you a lot further.”

“Fortunately, my Columbia College education and commitment to education gave me the courage, confidence, and competence to pursue my dream of teaching. I was recently offered a long –term sub position and a permanent teaching position on the same day and am teaching 5th grade ELA and math. I am so proud to be C² alumni because my phenomenal Columbia College education gave me the skills and knowledge to be an effective teacher. The variety of strategies I learned in my classes have helped me reach my students in new and innovative ways. At the end of my classes, students are begging to stay with me for the rest of the day because they enjoy my classes.
Thank you for accepting me into the Evening Program! In addition, thanks Columbia College for providing me with a world class education.
I was nominated for Teacher of the Year. On March 5, 2010, I was named Midlands Math and Business Academy’s 2009-2010 Teacher of the Year. This honor was bestowed upon me because each and every day I exhibited the 4C’s of Columbia College. I was competent, confident, courageous, and committed to excellence.”
