About the Director
Mimi Meriwether joins Columbia College as the Director of Counseling services with over 14 years of experience. Most recently she worked as the Director of Psychological Health for the South Carolina Air National Guard serving military members and their families. Her experience includes Palmetto Health hospital system in Columbia, South Carolina where she served as a licensed professional counselor at the outpatient behavioral health center for Palmetto Health Counseling, and coordinator of Palmetto Health Baptist’s employee assistance program. Her tenure with Palmetto Health also included the South Carolina Cancer Center where she worked as part of an interdisciplinary psychosocial team providing counseling services to adult oncology patients. Previously she worked as a counselor in the Child, Adolescent and Family Services division of Lexington County Mental Health, and also managed her own private counseling practice.
A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Mimi earned her Ed.S. in Counselor Education with a specialization in marriage, couples and family counseling. She completed her clinical residency at the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Marietta College in Ohio where she earned a B.A. in communications.
Mimi brings a wealth of experience to Columbia College which includes therapeutic work with a diversity of client populations, in both individual and group settings. She is committed to providing a range of services intended to help students develop improved coping skills in order to address emotional, interpersonal, and academic concerns.Some of her clinical interests include mood and anxiety disorders, body image concerns, trauma, suicide prevention, grief and loss, and identity development. Her approach to therapy is integrative and incorporates interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral and developmental theories.
In her free time Mimi, enjoys kayaking, running, sailing and traveling. She resides in Columbia with her husband George and their adopted Golden Retriever Azimuth.
