Literary Studies (Minor)

A passion for the power of the written word and a desire to understand the human experience through the art of storytelling unites Literary Studies majors at Columbia College. This unique academic opportunity allows interested students to explore a range of different genres–from drama and poetry to fiction and film–all while cultivating a valuable set of analytical skills.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go

You can join the English Majors Society and Sigma Tau Delta Honor Society—a strong community of engaged learners and friends—and off you’ll go to New Orleans, Chicago, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and other major cities to present at the annual Sigma Tau Delta International Convention.

English majors have spent semesters working at the Library of Congress, the Senate Press Corps, and the Children’s Defense Fund as part of the Washington Semester Program. We have sent an unprecedented number of lit studies majors to the prestigious Summer Institute for Cultural and Literary Studies at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts.

The Sky is the Limit

Ophelia Doe, president of Young Democrats of South Carolina, works at PricewaterhouseCooper.

A recent New York Times article cited a survey of employers who hired a quarter of their workforce from two- and four-year colleges: 89 percent said they wanted more emphasis on “the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing,” and 81 percent asked for better “critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills.”

English graduates know how to think and how to communicate. Recent graduates are enjoying careers in a diverse range of professional fields, including higher education admissions, higher education development, and finance. Over the years, graduates have entered the fields of publishing, editing, grant-writing, advertising, and business.
