NSF Grant: Developing Women Scholar Leaders in
Chemistry, Mathematics and Computing (DWSL-CMC)
Columbia College offers National Science Foundation scholarships for women of up to $7,500 per year !
To increase the number of women and minorities graduating with degrees in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), the National Science Foundation and Columbia College are promoting a program called Developing Women Scholars-Leaders in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Computing. The program includes distinctive courses, seminars, field trips and group dinners, as well as mentoring by faculty and industry representatives. A cornerstone of the program is a grant of up to $7500 per year for four years. Nine of these grants were awarded in the fall of 2010 and ten more were awarded in the fall of 2011.
Requirements for women scholar-leaders:
Must be full-time students in one of the specified majors, namely, chemistry, mathematics, or computer and information science (CIS).
Must have financial need as indicated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and confirmed by the Columbia College Office of Financial Aid.
Must be a U.S. citizen, have national refugee alien status, or have a permanent resident alien status
Must satisfy at least two of the following prior to entering college:
Combined SAT score of 1100 (critical reading and math) or
composite ACT of 24
High school GPA of 3.0 based on the SC Uniform Grading Scale
High school class rank in the upper 30% of graduating class
Must maintain a college gpa of 2.5 to continue receiving the scholarship in subsequent years
In addition, the scholars are expected to attend lunchtime seminars and field trips arranged especially for them, and to meet with their advisor/mentor regularly during the academic year.
