The Provost is the chief academic officer of Columbia College. The Provost oversees the divisions and programs of the College and is charged with overall leadership of student affairs, the library , the registrar’s office, the Institute for Leadership and Professional Excellence, the Office of Disability Services, The Office for Institutional Research and all academic divisions.

Executive Vice President, Interim Provost
Dr. Kyle R. Carter
Dr. Carter brings a broad and deep perspective to higher education as a result of a 41-year career in academia.  Carter earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from Mercer University and holds a masters and Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Georgia. He has held faculty and administrative appointments at five different universities in four different states. Administrative appointments included department chair, associate dean, dean of the graduate school, associate vice president for research, president of a research corporation, provost (at two institutions) and chancellor.  He retired as Chancellor from UNC Pembroke in June 2016 after a highly successful chancellorship and was awarded the title Chancellor Emeritus.

Dr. Chris Burkett

Dr. Chris BurkettDr. Chris BurkettDr. Burkett came to Columbia College in the summer of 2006. Dr. Burkett has taught in the undergraduate Middle Level Program, the Divergent Learning Masters Program, as well as the Higher Education Administration Masters Program. Before coming to Columbia College, Dr. Burkett taught two years in the undergraduate teacher preparation program at Newberry College. Dr. Burkett spent eleven years in the public school classroom teaching social studies to high school students, as well as coaching various sports. While in public education, Dr. Burkett was the recipient of the Sallie Mae First Year Teacher of the Year Award for the state of South Carolina, the State Paper Teacher of the Year Award, and was also honored as the Dutch Fork High School Teacher of the Year. In 2008, Dr. Burkett was named the Exemplary Teacher Educator of the Year by the South Carolina Association of Teacher Educators. Dr. Burkett’s research interests include educational technology, best practices, and classroom management.
